Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram Instructions
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the test if it is scheduled for the A.M. If the test is scheduled for the P.M., you may eat a light breakfast.
- You will have one IV in your hand or arm.
- EKG leads will be applied to the chest.
- Your blood pressure will be taken frequently throughout the test.
- You will be given and IV medication (Dobutamine) that will mimic the body's response to exercise.
- Ultrasound images will be taken initially and at various stages throughout the test.
- The test will take no more than one hour to complete.
IMPORTANT: If you have any chest pain or shortness of breath, call our office immediately.
This test will help the physician evaluate the arteries of your heart. Any side effects of Dobutamine are easily reversed by turning off the infusion, as it is very short-acting.
NOTE: Test results generally take 72 hours to produce. Your CVC physician will notify you the results by letter. If the results are significantly abnormal, the physician will call you to discuss further.
